Successful comedies at Catalina

2008-04-14 00:00

A short season of two one-woman shows will be at the Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf from April 16 to 27. Bridesmaid and My CV are both written and performed by Mary Steward and directed by Emma Durden.

Bridesmaid was performed at both the Musho and Grahamstown festivals last year and looks at the premise of having been always the bridesmaid, never the bride, telling the story of a woman who has been a bridesmaid seven times through a decade of bad dresses and drunken dancing.

Her reflections on these relationships, families, decor and disasters lead her towards her own discovery of herself.

My CV was runner-up for the Audience Favourite Award and the Sulliman Selection prize at this year’s Musho Festival. The play is an insightful look into what we’re supposed to be in the world.

What are we “working” towards? Steward tries to work it out from the early questions of what you want to be when you’re grown up, from choosing subjects in high school to eventually staring at a business card wondering: “Is this it? Am I really a sales co-ordinator?”.

Bridesmaid is on nightly at 8 pm (except Thursday and Sunday); My CV on Thursdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 6 pm only. Tickets are R60 (R30 concessions). There is a Double Decker special: buy tickets for both shows and pay only R100.

Both shows are comedies, suitable for all ages and last for 55 minutes. For more information or to book, contact the Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889.
