Super rugby: Smit back at loosehead prop

2011-03-16 00:00

JOHN Smit is continuing his front-row merry-go-round and will captain the Sharks from loosehead prop when they play the Chiefs in Friday’s Super Rugby match in Hamilton, writes JOHN BISHOP.

With Beast Mtawarira being rested, Smit is switched from tighthead, where he played for the Sharks against the Rebels in Melbourne last Friday.

Jannie du Plessis, on the bench in Melbourne, is back at tighthead.

Smit will also be happy not to be named on the tighthead where he struggles to make a consistent impact.

He is certainly better suited to loosehead and made an impact in that position for the Sharks in the Super 14 last year.

Fullback Louis Ludik was the only player with fitness concerns, but he has been included in the line-up.

Kick-off is at 8.35 am SA time on Friday.

Sharks team:

15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Stefan Terblanche, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Patrick Lambie, 9. Charl McLeod, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Alistair Hargreaves, 4 Steven Sykes, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 John Smit (captain)

Substitutes: 16 Craig Burden, 17 Tendai Mtawarira, 18 Anton Bresler, 19 Jacques Botes, 20 Conrad Hoffmann, 21 Jacques-Louis Potgieter, 22 Adrian Jacobs.
