Support for Gale in racism case

CAPE TOWN — Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon says they will support captain Andrew Gale’s case against a reported charge of racism.

The 30-year-old on Wednesday became the first county cricketer to be accused of a racism offence after he was charged by the England & Wales Cricket Board. He was also banned for two games.

The incident occurred on September 3 when Yorkshire were looking to wrap up the county championship against Lancashire at Old Trafford.

According to the Telegraph, Gale and South African Ashwell Prince were understood to have exchanged insults in the final moments on the third day of the match.

Gale moved himself in the field in an attempt to squeeze in one further over. He moved closer to Prince who is alleged to have told him to “f*** off back to cover point”. Gale responded by saying, “Well you can f*** off back to your own country you Kolpak f*****.”

Kolpak players are cricketers born outside England, but able to play in the country as non-overseas players according to European Union law.

According to BBC Sport, Moxon said Yorkshire will help their skipper “in any way possible to help him clear his name”.

In Gale’s absence, Yorskhire beat Nottinghamshire last Friday to win their 31st outright County Championship title.

Gale was informed that he would not be allowed to lift the trophy with the team, but took to the field later to join his team-mates.
