A first of its kindA SUPPORT group for the survivors of traumatic head injuries will launch in Pietermaritzburg to help survivors heal their emotional their scars, a first of its kind.

Founders Mashnee Anooklaal and Richard Jacob are both head trauma survivors. They said the Head Trauma Support Group, a first of its kind, will hold its first meeting in Hayfields at 5 pm on the March 19.

Jacob travelled to the U.S. last year to remove a brain tumour. Anooklaal underwent a similar operation almost 12 years ago.

Jacob said they started thesupport group because there was no support group for head trauma survivors in Pietermaritzburg. He said it was important to realise that people who had experienced physical traumawere also suffered from the emotional trauma arising from that physical trauma.

“The Head Trauma Support Group is a meeting to share experiences for people and their loved ones. Those who have suffered and survived severe head trauma, due to natural causes or as a result of any other act or accident. It will be facilitated by well-known Pietermaritzburg psychologists.

“My friend went through an operation 12 years ago and it nearly destroyed her life. After the operation, she realised that in Pietermaritzburg there was no one that she could talk to about what she had went through.”

“There are many people in South Africa you have suffered traumatic head injuries either in car accidents or they were stabbed in the head but I do not know how to find them. This group will be an opportunity for all of them to be able to share their experiences,” he said.

Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to contact either Anooklaal at 082 496 6798 or Jacob at 082 806 4068.
