Surfing: Teen competitor overcomes his grief

2008-06-08 00:00

A TEENAGE Durban surfer rose above the pain of losing three close family members to compete in the ChemSpec Durban Surfing JPC competition at the weekend.

Mikyle le Roux (15) lost his nine-year-old sister Denim, his mother’s boyfriend Walter Prangley and his aunt Corine Gayle in a terrible accident on the M7 last Sunday. His mother, Anthea, is still in King Edward Hospital in Durban.

Surfers applauded Mikyle as he emerged from the water after finishing his first heat on Friday before attending the first funeral.

Contest director Charles le Fevre changed the order to allow Mikyle to attend his sister’s funeral on Friday morning and that of his mother’s boyfriend in the afternoon. His aunt’s funeral was held on Saturday morning.

Mikyle’s father Raymond le Roux, who was waiting on the beach to take his son to the funeral, was touched by the support. “Whilst this is a terrible time for all of us, it is amazing to feel the outpouring of love and support …” said Le Roux.
