Surfski pros all set to hit the beaches

THE 2014 surfski season gets underway when the Borland Surfski Challenge, race one of Varsity College Marine Surfski Series, takes place at Marine Surf Lifesaving Club at Addington Beach tomorrow.

Series defending champion Hank McGregor, Grant van der Walt and Umhlanga powerhouse Matt Bouman are expected to dominate proceedings at the front of the men’s field. Michelle Burn will be the one to catch in the women’s field.

Another first for the series is joining forces with the Lettie Paddle campaign, which seeks to raise funds for and create awareness of cancer.

The 10-race series culminates in the Varsity College SA Schools Surfski Challenge, which will see the cream of the country’s surfski talent battle for the prestigious title plus a bursary into Varsity College’s Sport Life programme.

Paddlers can take part in the 8 km long or 4 km short course with racing starting at 5.30 pm each week. Weekly registration opens at 4.30 pm at Marine SLC with a once-off registration today from 4.30 pm to 7 pm.
