‘Surge’ damages appliances

2008-01-09 00:00

RESIDENTS of the Seven Ox area in Edendale are angry after repairs to power installations done by unidentified Eskom staff caused damage to dozens of appliances.

Residents in 50 households, who experienced three power outages and short circuiting of appliances, say they are afraid to use electricity after it was restored yesterday as it seems to be at a higher voltage than normal.

“When we put on the lights or try to plug in an electrical appliance, it goes on with a loud bang then gives off sparks and then the power goes off,” said Gertrude Dlamini, who has resorted to cooking on a fire in her yard.

“We are afraid for our lives, we can’t touch anything … In future we will write down the numberplates of any Eskom vehicle we see in the area because we need to know what is happening with our electricity supply, and whether or not there are culprits tampering with the electricity,” said resident Buyisile Mosehle.

Angry residents and ward councillor Patrick Jaca confronted Eskom officials who arrived to inspect the damages.
