Survey: President Zuma is ‘most popular political leader’

2009-08-17 00:00

JUST 100 days in office and President Jacob Zuma’s popularity has been on the rise. An Ipsos Markinor survey found that Zuma has the highest popularity rating among all current political leaders and that nearly three in every 10 South Africans (28%) are in favour of him.

According to the survey, when he was elected president of the ANC, this figure stood at 17%. Mari Harris of the Markinor team says that black people and ANC supporters are Zuma’s strongest supporters, but he is receiving appreciation from other groups.

With the bite of the current recession, the survey found South Africans are finding the affordability of basic services a problem. Close to 57% said it is difficult to afford education; 61% had a problem with affording housing, while between five and six out of every 10 people surveyed said affording electricity and water was an issue.

Government scores a high rating on its grant distribution system, but gets a low rating on reducing crime and fighting corruption.
