Suspect dies after arrest

A MAN wanted in connection with the rape of an eight-year-old that occurred in October last year collapsed and died in Marburg after he was arrested yesterday.

It is alleged that the suspect fled into the bushes in Palm View in Marburg after being located by police at a nearby household.

After police tracked him down he was found hanging from a tree by his shirt in what appeared to be an attempted suicide.

He was immediately brought down off of the tree by police officers. Once he was on the ground, it is alleged that he tried to attack the officers while holding a knife.

He was then contained with the aid of a police dog. After standing up shortly after being arrested, he collapsed and died at the scene.

The incident occurred at around 10.30 am, but it was not until around 3.30 pm tha his body was removed from the bushes.

A man, who requested anonymity, was in his house about 20 metres away from the bushes where the incident took place.

“I heard about 10 or 15 gunshots and I had no idea what was going on,” he said.

“Then I heard this constant screaming …”

At this point the Marburg resident left his house to see what was going on.

“There were two police dogs. I saw one of them run out of the bush and it was absolutely covered in blood,” he said.

Officials from the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) attended the scene.

Scottburgh police spokesperson Captain Vincent Pandarum confirmed that the name of the victim could not be released until his next of kin had been notified.
