Suspect fatally wounded

A SUSPECTED rhino poacher was fatally wounded when he resisted arrest by rangers in northern KZN this week.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said on Thursday afternoon, rangers in Ndumo reserve came across the carcass of a white rhino that had been killed very recently. The large horn had been removed.

Thinking the poachers would return for the other horn, they hid in the thick bush. At about 6 pm, five men approached, Mntambo said.

The rangers identified themselves and told the men to lay down their weapons. One of the men pointed his firearm at them and was shot in the leg, while the others fled.

The rangers gave the man first aid, and summoned an ambulance, but he died before paramedics arrived.
