Suspect in court for Richmond attack

A 20-YEAR-old man appeared in Richmond court yesterday in connection with an attack on a Richmond farm, in which the farm owner fatally shot one of two intruders last month.

Suspect Skhulu Bhekwa was arrested in the Richmond area on Sunday after an intensive investigation by the town’s police. During the arrest, police recovered a DVD player that was stolen from David Warren’s farmhouse during the attack.

It was suspected that Warren shot and wounded the second intruder.

But police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram could not confirm this.

During the night of the attack, Warren (54) and his wife Muffy (51) had just got into bed after they had finished packing for a hunting trip in Pretoria. The two intruders smashed their bedroom window, jumped on their bed and started stabbing Warren in the chest.

Warren had a 45 mm pistol he had prepared to take with him for the long trip next to his bed. He used it to defend himself, killing the intruder.
