Suspect is neat, calm and composed

THE suspect in the rape and murder of Roodepoort pupil Louise de Waal will be transported back to Gauteng today from the Margate police station where he was held since yesterday morning. The 35-year-old man handed himself in at the station at 6 am and reportedly confessed to Wednesday’s rape and murder of the 16-year-old.

The tall, slender and well-groomed suspect appeared calm and composed when he emerged outside the Margate holding cells yesterday, wearing beige cargo shorts and a blue and white striped golf shirt.

The suspect had a bald head and was clean shaven. An identikit composed after Louise was snatched showed him with short hair and beard.

Margate police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed that the man drove to Margate overnight in his luxury Gold Mercedes Benz SUV. It has not been established why he fled to Margate.

“The suspect walked into our station this morning and confessed to the rape and murder of Louise de Waal. He told the officers that he had contacted his brother and confessed to him.

“[The brother] had convinced the suspect to turn himself over at the nearest police station.” This at the urging of the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Peet du Toit.

Mfeka said the man appeared to be calm and in control and was being co-operative. He said the Hawks arrived shortly after the suspect. “The Hawks had been travelling the whole night in pursuit of [him].”
