A MAN has been convicted after pleading guilty in the high court in Pietermaritzburg to the murder of farmer Gert Uys (55) last month.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Snenhlanhla Mbatha (33) pleaded guilty to the murder and armed robbery.

“He was convicted of all charges and was sentenced [on Tuesday] in the Pietermaritzburg High Court to 24 years on a count of murder and 14 years on armed robbery,” said Zwane.

“He was the third suspect, who was arrested on August 13 [in] Secunda, Mpumalanga.”

Two other suspects, Andries Maviyezulu (28) and Christian Smith (43), are still in custody and will appear in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for a bail application, he said.

Smith and Maviyezulu were arrested on August 1, also in Mpumalanga.

Two firearms were recovered during the arrest and will be sent for ballistic tests to determine whether they have been used for the murder.

Swart-Mfolozi farmer Uys was shot dead on July 31 in his farmhouse near Vryheid as he was preparing to pay an employee.

Zwane said Mbatha and Maviyezulu allegedly approached Uys and shot and killed him. They are alleged to have taken R18 000 cash and his revolver and fled the scene in his 4X4.

“The vehicle was later found abandoned at Swart-Mfolozi gravel road the same day.

“A case of murder and house robbery was opened and Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit took over the investigation,” Zwane said.
