SWIFT response from Umzimkulu police resulted in the arrest of a suspect during a burglary in progress on Friday.

Lieutenant Mziwabantu Memani, Detective Sergeant Vusimuzi Henry Nguse and Constable Sandile Ngcibi responded to a report of a burglary at Rhino Cash and Carry in Umzimkulu.

When they arrived on the scene a suspect was spotted on the roof. They arrested the 27-year-old suspect from Mariannhill. He had in his possession various brands of cigarettes to the value of R2 000.

Police say two suspects gained entry into the store by removing corrugated iron roof sheeting in the early hours of Friday morning. This activated the alarm and the security company alerted police. When they arrived on scene they arrested the first suspect on the roof.

The second suspect managed to flee the scene and evade arrest. It is believed that he may have fled in a car that had been seen in the vicinity of the store.

Police have descriptions of both the vehicle and the second suspect. They expect to make arrests of the second suspect and a getaway driver soon.

The arrested suspect is in police custody and is expected to appear in the Umzimkulu Magistrates Court this week.
