Suspect ‘seen at airport’

“I AM speechless. We have been left in the lurch,” was Suzette Barnard’s reaction when she heard journalists had spotted the alleged murderer of her daughter, Chantelle, at the Maputo airport yesterday, but that the suspect then still managed to elude the alerted authorities.

Journalists Erika Gibson and Felix Dlangamandla were waiting for their flight to Johannesburg when Dlangamandla spotted the man.

“I took a picture of him with my cellphone which I sent to [reporter] Wolfram Zwecker, who did the court story,” said Gibson. “However, we had to take the flight to Johannesburg … The only other airplane parked on the runway was from Kenya Airways. I informed Wolfram.”

The idea was that Kenyan police and customs officers would await the flight from Maputo at the Nairobi airport and take the suspect into custody as he left the plane.

“This, however, did not happen. The passenger list will now be studied to try and determine if the man had travelled under a fasle name, Gibson said.
