Suspected burglar gets mob justice

A VIGILANTE group yesterday attacked and killed a housebreaking suspect in Willowfountain.

It’s alleged that the man, aged between 30 and 36, was caught red-handed in one of the houses.

A resident, who did not want to be named out of fear for his life, told The Witness that the man came running down the road with members of the community chasing him.

He tripped and fell, hitting the back of his head and was set upon by the crowd.

“He was assaulted by the group with pipes and sticks,” he said.

A police source said they were called but it had proved difficult for them to get answers from the community who did not even want to point out the house the man was allegedly breaking into.

“The community is scared to speak as they have now realised that this man [has] died.”

Police spokesperson captain Musa Ntombela said they were investigating a murder case.

“It’s not clear what happened and the man has not been identified. The community must contact the police and not take the law into their own hands,” Ntombela said.

He said no arrests have been made and appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact the police station on 033 398 9730 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
