Suspected drug dealers in court

2008-07-07 00:00

Two men from Estcourt, Riaz Yacoob (34) and Yunus Mahomed (36), appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with a charge that they dealt in an as yet undetermined number of illegal tablets.

The case was postponed until today, both men remaining in custody overnight.

SAPS spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said at the weekend that the two accused were arrested for allegedly dealing in 2 100 Roche/Sandoz tablets with an estimated street value of R40 000 on Thursday last week.

However, the prosecution indicated yesterday that it has yet to confirm with the investigating officer in the case exactly how many tablets are involved and what the value of the drugs is. They asked for more time to determine these and other issues.

It is alleged that the accused contravened the Medicines Act.

Defence lawyer Rashid Patel, said that Yacoob, wished to tender a plea to the charges.

He confirmed that lengthy negotiations took place at the court throughout the day yesterday, but by the time the court day ended, the matter had not been finalised.

As Patel is not available until later in the week, the accused elected to appoint new counsel to represent them.

The case was thereafter postponed until today.
