Suspected‘roof wall’ trio nabbed

2012-09-11 00:00

THREE men were arrested in Pietermaritzburg yesterday morning as they disembarked from a Greyhound bus from Johannesburg after police recovered part of a R2 million haul of jewellery, airtime vouchers, cellphones and a large amount of money.

The operation was conducted by a Plessislaer cluster project team unit under the command of Captain Sada Pillay.

The men allegedly broke into In Touch Cellular shop and Fair Deal Pawn Brokers in Galway Lane in the Pietermaritzburg CBD in the early hours of Friday.

When approached for comment, both shops declined to speak to The Witness.

The men apparently gained entry by removing an air conditioner unit.

They cut into a safe with an angle grinder and stainless steel chisel and used bolt cutters, avoiding the sensors in the safe.

The men had gone to Gauteng to get rid of 30 cellphones, including 10 BlackBerry smartphones, jewellery and some of the airtime vouchers and were returning to Pietermaritzburg with the balance of their loot.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the men were believed to be the “roof wall” gang, who gain entry into premises by removing parts of a wall or a roof and deactivating the security system.

The suspects are in their mid- 20s and are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

Any other victims who have suffered similar burglaries should call the investigating officer, Warrant Officer V.V. Madlala, at 082 595 1262.
