Suspects hide with dead victim

THREE people have been arrested following the murder of a 60-year-old businessperson during a house robbery in Greytown yesterday.

Joe Harrold was murdered at about 10.20 am. His killers were arrested shortly thereafter by Shivrika Field Security guards.

Shivrika owner Sudesh Maharaj said he was alerted by a neighbour to a commotion at Harrold’s McCullum Street home.

“I responded and when I arrived at the house, the gate was open,” he said.

Maharaj said he saw blood as he approached the house and called for back-up. At that point Harrold’s domestic worker emerged and began to cry on seeing him.

With additional guards in tow, Maharaj then entered the home and found Harrold’s body sticking out of a bedroom into a passage. Hearing noises from inside the home, Maharaj and the guards conducted a thorough search of the interior.

“We found one suspect who was hiding underneath a bed,” he said.

On being questioned, the man told them there were two others hiding in the bedroom where Harrold’s body was lying. “We handcuffed him and searched for the two suspects, who were found hiding behind a wardrobe. We handcuffed them and handed them over to the SAPS,” said Maharaj.

He said a fourth suspect, who unknown to them was outside during the arrests, escaped.

A bloodstained knife, thought to be the murder weapon, was found at the scene and handed to the police.

Maharaj described Harrold as a well-known person in the community. In the wake of the incident, his phone had been inundated with calls from concerned people wanting to know what had happened to him.

Maharaj said Harrold’s wife had not been home at the time of the attack. She returned after being informed of the incident, to be told that her husband had been killed.

Harrold, who was self-employed in the construction and gardening services industries, leaves behind two sons, a daughter and his wife.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the three suspects, aged 18 to 20, would appear in the Greytown Magistrate’s Court soon.
