Swallows completely outplayed by Arrows

MOROKA Swallows arrived in Umlazi top of the PSL last night, but at the end of 90 minutes they had been schooled by the bottom club in the league as Golden Arrows set King Zwelithini Stadium alight on their way to a 2-1 win.

In coach Mark Harrison’s first home match since taking over the reins from Manqoba Mngqithi last month, Arrows showed passion, a sense of urgency and a desire to play entertaining yet sensible football.

The result was a first half in which goals from Thanduyise Khuboni and Bonginkosi Ntuli lifted Arrows off the foot of the table as Swallows were completely outplayed.

Defender Luvhengo Mungomeni pulled one back for Swallows late in the game.

Arrows had looked lively in the early stages with Litha Ngxabi playing just behind Ntuli up front — both showing plenty of energy and pace.

After having an early header cleared off the line on 10 minutes, Ntuli would get his reward just two minutes later when he was controversially awarded a penalty after Rudi Isaacs was adjudged to have pulled him down in the area.

When captain Thanduyise Khuboni calmly placed the ball into the top left corner to give Arrows the lead, the importance of the goal was felt by everybody as Harrison and the rest of the technical team erupted into celebration on the bench.

Arrows were just as determined when they didn’t have the ball, and whenever the likes of Lerato Chabangu were in possession for Swallows, they were pressed at pace by a well structured Arrows defensive unit.

After Swallows lost possession one too many times, Philani Shange capitalised to play Ntuli in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Greg Etafia. The striker displayed enough composure to coolly slide the ball into the bottom left corner.

The second half was played at a slower pace — but only just.

Arrows should have been 3-0 up on 57 minutes when Ntuli — superb on the night — broke down the left flank before finding Shange at the top of the box with an accurate cross. But the winger’s shot was well saved by Etafia.

With 11 minutes remaining it was game on as Mungomeni rose above the Arrows defence to convert a Chabangu free kick, but it was too little too late for Swallows.
