Swanepoel to play for Clermont in France

CHUNKY Sharks centre Riaan Swanepoel has been released from his contract and will join French rugby giant Clermont-Ferrand next month.

Swanepoel, who has been on the Sharks bench for a couple of Super Rugby games this year, has been signed by Clermont on a short-term contract as cover for club captain and France centre Aurelien Rougerie and Italian Gonzalo Canale, who are both set to be involved in the World Cup in New Zealand.

Swanepoel is set to join up with the 2010 French champions at a training camp on July 11.

Sharks commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli told The Witness yesterday that coach John Plumtree had a number of midfield options.

Super Rugby centres Meyer Bosman and Stefan Terblanche will soon be joined by former Springbok Marius Joubert, while Adi Jacobs, overlooked by Bok coach Peter de Villiers when he named his 37-man World Cup planning squad on Wednesday, will probably be available for the Currie Cup.

The speedy Paul Jordaan, who is in the South African U20 starting line-up to play Scotland at the World Cup tomorrow, and Sibusiso Sithole, scorer of the match-winning try in the Boks’ 38-35 victory over Australia in the final of the Edinburgh Sevens, will be challenging for places.

As a final thought for the future, what about Ma’a Nonu? The powerful All Black centre has fallen out with his Hurricanes bosses and his contract has not been renewed.

Plumtree, of course, is a former Wellington coach and he is a close friend of Nonu.

Now that would be a signing worth writing home about.
