Swartkop Challenge takes place in Ladysmith on April 10

THE eighth Swartkop Challenge takes place at Wagon Hill, Ladysmith, on April 10 and 11.

The Swartkop Challenge is an extreme sport event involving different teams of 20 plus two leaders who draw an antique gun weighing some 1 300 kg up a hill over a course of some 130 metres. Once they have got the gun to the top they then have to fire it.

Winners of the 2009 competition, the Defence Force of the Kingdom of Lesotho, are returning and will test the new rule of the team maximum weight of 1 900 kg. Also participating are veteran local unit SANDF unit 5th Battalion and South African Infantry (5 SAI). The Royal Navy are also expected to send a team.
