Swayimane: Victims were ambushed

2013-02-05 00:00

THE Pietermaritzburg high court heard yesterday that ANC supporters were ambushed when they drove a motorcade through an IFP stronghold at Swayimane outside Pietermaritzburg.

The supporters were celebrating their party’s election victory in April 2009 when they were ambushed. Zemisile Hlongwane was killed and seven were injured in the incident.

One of the injured, Gladys Gcumisa, testified in the trial of five IFP members of the same family that had the car she was travelling in not run out of petrol when they entered the IFP “territory”, there would ha-ve been “many more dead bodies”.

Five Gumedes — Zwelempi (71), IFP councillor Fumakosi (41), Mephatimeni (29), Busani (21) and Qapekini (21) — are facing a charge of killing Hlongwane and seven counts of attempted murder.

They have pleaded not guilty.
