Sweet: 8 nabbed after sugar hijack

2011-11-04 00:00

POLICE have arrested eight suspects and recovered 34 tons of sugar which was stolen during a truck hijacking on Durban’s South Coast Road last Friday.

After being hijacked the truck driver and his crew were held hostage until Saturday morning. When the escaped from their captors, they reported the matter to the Montclair police station.

On Wednesday the investigating task team received information that the truck was spotted passing through the Midlands on the N3 freeway.

The police stopped the truck, which was empty and driven by a Zimbabwean national who was headed to Zimbabwe with plans to sell the truck, which is worth close to R2 million new.

Following his arrest, the police swooped on five foreigners in Durban who are all linked to the case.

This in turn led them to premises in Clairwood, where the sugar was recovered, ready for dispatching to the Eastern Cape.

A local man and a Pakistani national were arrested for receiving stolen property. A suspect, who was waiting for payment for the consignment from the Pakistani national, was arrested at a shopping mall in Umlazi. The suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Police are also searching for an oil truck that was recently hijacked in the same area.
