QUICK action and co-ordination by the police nabbed five hijackers on Tuesday evening.

The five suspects were caught driving a vehicle that was hijacked in the city. They appeared in court yesterday and are charged with hijacking and attempted murder.

Thulani Dladla (20), Nkuleleko Madlala (16), Xolani Mbhense (20), Minenhle Mzobe (17) and Zamokuhle Ntshangase were arrested by the Pietermaritzburg dog unit on Tuesday evening, after they are alleged to have hijacked a vehicle and shot a man.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said the five allegedly accosted Sibusiso Zulu, who was in his car with a friend in Langalibalele Street. They allegedly hijacked the pair and forced them to drive to Richmond, where they shot Zulu’s friend in the shoulder and dumped them there.

Zulu reported the incident to the Richmond police.

The suspects allegedly drove back to Pietermaritzburg in Zulu’s car and were nabbed by the police dog unit in Mayor’s Walk.

Jeevan said: “When the hijacking and attempted murder case were opened in Richmond, the details were circulated … the dog unit spotted the suspects in Mayor’s Walk and arrested them, and the vehicle was recovered.”

She said the suspects were remanded in custody.
