Swim costs canoeing title

Both the KZN Flat Water and River K2 Championships for 2008 were decided last weekend.

Hank McGregor and Brett Bartho took the Flat Water title at the Eric’s Canoe Shoppe Challenge on Blue Lagoon on Saturday. For most of the 15-km race they were in a four-boat group with second placed sub-veterans, Herman Chalupsky and André Pohl, Wayne Wilson and Barry Lewin, and the leading U21 crew of Brent Chiazzari and Matt Collins.

Tiffany Kruger and Danica Vorster had little trouble in the small women’s field, winning in 16th place overall, just over three minutes ahead of Hillary Pitchford and Natalie Vecranges.

Luke Chalupsky and Jonothan Jacob had their third win in a row in the boys’ race in an excellent fifth place overall and U14’s Brittany Petersen and Kerry Segal took the girls’ title.

• A large field of 450 turned out on Sunday for the River Championships on the Medpharm Ngwenya Classic. Run over the testing section of the uMsindusi from Camps Drift to the Moto-X Weir, the race produced a number of upsets.

All went much as expected in the men’s race, with Barry Lewin and Wayne Wilson winning by six seconds from Doug Bird and Nick Burden, with U21s Chiazzari and Collins taking third.

Not so in the women’s race, where Kruger and Vorster arrived at the final Moto-X weir almost three minutes clear of Pitchford and Vecranges. However, they fell out in the tricky turbulence below the weir and, although first over the line, were relegated to second place after a protest from Pitchford and Vecranges. The race committe agreed that the pair had not been in their canoe when they crossed the finish line.

More upsets occurred in the boys’ race where Matt Dean and Owen Gandar had a surprise win over race favourites Chalupsky and Jacobs.
