2012-11-06 00:00

THE Speck Pumps Lake Eland Mile was a rip-roaring success as nearly 1 000 people descended on the game reserve on Sunday to share in the camaraderie of the popular open-water swim.

About 350 swimmers, including Olympic stars Charl Crous and Troyden Prinsloo, braved the cool water to compete in the six events.

The Olympic pair went head to head in the 500 metres, 3 000 metres and mile events and took most of their category prizes in first and second place. The Crous family also swam as a team and did exceptionally well.

A total of 440 medals and over R20 000 prize money were awarded across the categories.

Swimmers and supporters came from across the country to take up the opportunity to experience an open-water swim event in a game reserve.

The youngest swimmer was four years old, swimming the team event on her father’s back.

The oldest swimmer was 71.
