Swimming: record entry expected

2012-10-26 00:00

A RECORD entry is once again expected for the first of four open water swims that will take place at the popular Heia Safari Ranch venue on Sunday.

The Time Freight Heia Safari 1 000 m Challenge includes a three kilometre swim as well, where South Africa’s leading open water swimmers will be able to race for higher prize money this summer. About R10 000 in prize money has been allocated to the seeding swims at the Heia Safari Ranch in support of the top swimmers. All swimmers will receive a finishers medal and a free aQuelle at the end of each event.

The three kilometre gets under way at 8 am. Abdul Malick Railoun, Tyron Venter and Gareth Beech have always done well at this venue. But this time they will have some pressure from Mark Randall as well as a few seasoned masters swimmers in Gregg Price and Owen Shefftz.

Among the women, masters swimmers should feature strongly with Rachelle Isakov, Nadia Bacchini and Karen Kennedy competing.

The top three swimmers in the three kilometre events in both men and women will get among the prize R1 500 for first, R1 000, for second and R500 for third place. The winners of the respective categories in all the 1 000 m swims will win R200 each while the top men and women in the 14-30 age group event can take home R500 for a win, R250 for second and R150 for third place.

The order of events for the races are:

8 am – All Ages 3km

9.30 am – Girls 13 yrs and under, Women 31 years and older

10.20 am – Boys 13 yrs and under, Men 31 years and over

11.10 am – Boys and Girls 14-30 years

12.10 pm – Fun Swim 400 m All Ages

Late entries will be accepted at the event at R180 and swimmers should arrive at least an hour before each event. Vehicles will be charged R30 at the gate, while buses will be R150 to enter.
