Swinging in the 70s

2010-01-25 00:00

NEW to SABC3 this week is Swingtown, which will be broadcast Tuesday to Thursday at 10.15 pm.

Made by the director of Big Love and Rome, Swingtown peeks into the shag-carpeted suburban homes of the 1970s to find couples revelling in the sexual and social revolution that introduced open marriages and women’s lib, and challenged conventional wisdom.

In the opening episode, Susan (Molly Parker) and Bruce Miller (Jack Davenport) move their family into an affluent Chicago suburb in search of a different sense of community and a change of pace for their teenage daughter and pre-teen son.

Enter Tom (Grant Show) and Trina Decker (Lana Parrilla), a striking, outgoing couple who make Susan and Bruce realise that couples in this town share much more than recipes, local gossip and a view of Lake Michigan.

Other highlights this week include:

• The Good Wife — M-Net, 8.30 pm: Julianna Marguiles plays Alicia Florrick, the wife of a disgraced U.S. state attorney, who has been jailed. Alicia returns to her old job as a litigator to provide for her two children and in the opening episode discovers that an apparently straightforward retrial of a woman accused of murdering her ex-husband isn’t that simple.

• Flashforward — M-Net, 8.30 pm: Great news for Flashforward fans; if you miss an episode of this great new sci-fi, starring Joseph Fiennes, you’ll be able to watch catch-up episodes on M-Net Series (DStv channel 110) at 7 pm on Sundays and at 7 am and 1 pm on Mondays.
