Swipe-and-run: man in court for allegedly smashing premier’s car

2009-09-30 00:00

A MAN who allegedly smashed into Premier Zweli Mkhize’s car on the N3 on Monday night appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was released on bail.

Thabani Makhathini was not asked to plead to any charges and the case was postponed to October 6 for further investigation and to allow him to finalise arrangements for legal representation.

He is expected to face charges of drinking and driving, failing to stop at an accident scene and reckless and negligent driving arising from the incident, according to police.

Makhathini was arrested after his VW Polo Playa allegedly “side-swiped” the premier’s vehicle on the N3 near Ashburton at about 7.45 pm on Monday.

The premier and his bodyguards were unhurt.

Makhathini allegedly did not stop, but carried on driving towards Pietermaritzburg. He was pulled over by the premier’s escort vehicle and handed over to police. He allegedly failed a breathalyser test.
