Sword murder

2008-08-21 00:00

Amid the constant catalogue of crime in this country, a particularly shocking example occurred this week. An 18-year- old schoolboy at the Technical High School in Krugersdorp, with his head covered by a gruesome mask, wantonly killed a fellow-pupil on the campus with a sword. Were it not for the bravery of two workers at the school who leapt in front of another boy and were injured in the process, there would have been another killing before the attacker was restrained.

The case is now sub judice but the gruesome facts seem clear enough. There is talk of the influence of Satanism and an American heavy- metal band, Slipknot. A free society facilitates such influences and makes some people question the moral legitimacy of such freedom. More important is the need for responsible people to recognise the signs of deviancy and to take preventative action before it spills over in gratuitous anti-social behaviour.
