Symcox vents his anger at ODI selectors and calls for all to resign

FORMER Protea off-spinner and batsman Pat Symcox has lashed out at selectors for the way they are handling the current ODI squad. Symcox, not one to mince his words, voiced his frustration by saying they should all resign, “and that includes convenor of selectors, Andrew Hudson”.

Symmo’s anger stemmed for the exclusion of all-rounder Ryan McLaren from the current side, especially after the loss to Pakistan at the weekend. “What is going on?” he said. “We are definitely not selecting our best players and it beats me how McLaren, Man of the Series in the UAE 10 days ago and our leading wicket-taker in ODI cricket this season, is now discarded and not good enough.

“Has he suddenly gone from being top of the pile to third in the pecking order? I ask this because Lonwabo Tsotsobe was sick before the game and was replaced with Vernon Philander. What are the selectors doing and surely they must tell us, the cricket public, why McLaren is not being selected.”

Symcox added he was sticking up for the players who always took the knock when not performing. “It’s unfair on the players. They get it all the time from the rest of the cricket world and are labelled as chokers and whatever else for not winning,” he said. “It’s the selectors who are to blame. They keep saying they are looking ahead to the World Cup and looking for what works best, but nothing is allowed to work with all the chopping and changing going on and players in and out the side.”

With the World Cup getting closer, Symcox believed it was time to select the best side and start winning matches and series. “How can we prepare for the World Cup when we keep losing?” he asked. “It’s ludicrous that we suddenly rest batsmen in the side. For what? I have never heard of a batsman who needs to rest. That’s his job and if he is the best there is, he must play.”

Hudson, responding to Symcox’s comments, said, “This is not the first time Symmo has asked me to resign. I’m getting quite used to it.”

He added, “Yes, it is tough to leave out a player of McLaren’s calibre who is performing so well, but we have no choice. Kallis has come back and he gives us another bowling option. With seven batsmen, who do we leave out? We cannot discard the pace offered by Steyn and Morkel and Philander bowls well with the new ball.

“There are certain guidelines we have to adhere to and we make decisions on what to work with. We always communicate with the players, including McLaren, and I say with confidence that he is definitely a major part of our ODI plans going forward.”

The convenor also added that back-up players needed important game time as well, hence players coming in and out the side.

“If one of our World Cup eleven players breaks down or gets injured, we need to know we have a replacement who has some game time in the tank,” said Hudson. “We cannot just call up a player who has been sitting on the sidelines and expect him to perform. Then the whole cycle of being unprepared and choking starts again. We need to see what is in the wings.”
