Systems in place for four by-elections in KZN

ITS all systems go for the four by-elections to be held in KwaZulu-Natal tomorrow to fill four ward councillor positions left vacant by the deaths of ANC councillors in recent months.

The by-elections are among the 15 the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will be holding in eight provinces where a total of 50 candidates will compete for the control of the vacant wards.

KZN provincial electoral commissioner Mawethu Mosery said all systems were in place for the by-elections to be held in three of the province’s municipalities. Mosery said police have a plan in place. “We don’t expect anything to go amiss,” he said.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said extra police officers will be deployed in those areas to ensure the process goes off peacefully.

In the by-elections to be held in Ward 4 of Port Shepstone-based Hibiscus Coast Municipality, ANC’s Khayelihle Registone Shinga will square up against IFP’s Ndabo David Zulu and NFP’s Zipho Simphiwe Yeni.

In the Estcourt-based Umtshezi Municipality the ANC’s Bongani Sunset Dladla will do battle with the IFP’s Thokozani Mandlenkosi Majola and NFP’s Sabelo Reginald Hadebe in Ward 1.

The ANC’s Zwela Zwane, IFP’s Gwaja Khumalo and NFP’s Nkosiyapha Penuel Nxumalo will battle for the control of Ward 8 in the same municipality.

In the Nquthu Municipality, Ward 14 will be contested by the ANC’s Abel Emmanuel Sithembiso Buthelezi, the IFP’s Sipho Randles Nyamane and the NFP’s Besta Ntombikayise Nkosi.

There will also be one by-election each in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, North West, Northern Cape and Western Cape while two others will be held in Mpumalanga and another four in Gauteng.

IEC national spokesperson Kate Bapela said voting would take place from 7 am until 9 pm in all the voting stations except in the Eastern Cape where voting was scheduled to take place between 7 am and 7 pm.
