THE wykeham collegiate: top student scores eight a’s

2011-01-05 00:00

THE mother of The Wykeham Collegiate’s top achiever in the Independent Examinations Board exams says she is not surprised that her daughter achieved eight distinctions..

Githa Lutchman said her daughter Karima had worked consistently throughout the year.

“I am absolutely proud of my daughter’s achievement … I was not surprised as she has always been excelling in her school work from primary school until she finished her grade 12,” she said.

Lutchman said she knew her daughter would do well because Karima does not work for awards, trophies or certificates but for herself because she is self-motivated.

“My advice to parents whose children are doing matric this year is that they must not pressurise them by making grade 12 a big thing. They must make their children understand that matric is a step on a ladder into developing themselves in doing what they would like to do.”

Said Karima: “I expected it because I worked hard throughout the year so that I could achieve these results, even though I was not happy with falling short of getting nine distinctions when I received 79% for my physical science paper.”

Karima advised pupils in grade 12 this year to be strong, motivated and willing to accept challenges as well as disappointments because that will make them learn valuable life lessons.

“I have not decided what it is that I am going to be doing this year. I been accepted to do actuarial science at the University of Cape Town, but I am still weighing my options.”

Karima said she was also excited about having achieved a distinction in isiZulu given that it is a second language.
