Taking care: Santaco to patrol taxi routes across KZN

2012-12-12 00:00

THE SA National Taxi Council KwaZulu-Natal (Santaco-KZN) has spent R2 million on 12 cars to be used to patrol taxi routes and ensure taxis are safe.

The vehicles are part of the organisation’s countrywide Operation Hlokomela (Take care) road safety programme.

Santaco officials will criss-cross KZN checking that drivers of both local and long-distance taxis have all the necessary permits, that vehicles are roadworthy, and that passengers are well treated.

Santaco national president July Msiza said taxis are the number one mode of transport for the majority of South Africans.

“Passengers must play an active role in ensuring that taxis they board are safe. The passengers are our bosses, without them we would not exist … We urge them to be more assertive in demanding better service.”

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said the initiative would complement his department’s Operation Valingozi (Prevent danger).
