Takkies help nab suspected murderer

2014-10-13 00:00

A PAIR of missing takkies helped nab a suspected killer last week.

Mathombi Bhengu, a 16-year-old Grade 9 pupil at Gobindlovu High School in Elandskop, was found dead in the early hours of last Wednesday with her takkies removed from her feet at Mafunze.

A resident, Sihle Sithole, said Mathombi ’s body was found by his sister near their gate.

“It was heartbreaking seeing her lying down facing the sky with blood on her mouth and nose. Mathombi’s mother collapsed when she arrived at the scene.”

He said neighbours crowded the scene and pupils who studied with Mathombi identified her. One pupil said her brother had bought her a new pair of takkies.

The angry community and police invaded the suspect’s home and found the takkies in his house.

“The community beat him up but the police rescued him and shoved him into the police van,” he said.

Sithole said there were signs that Bhengu was strangled and there were wounds on her body.

The man was allegedly released the same day and allegedly threatened to get back at those who helped nab him by killing them. He was re-arrested the following day, according to Sithole.

But police spokesperson Thulani Zwane disputed this, saying the 20-year-old man was only arrested on Thursday. He said the man was charged with murder.

He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court today.
