Tallest Madiba statue yet for Union Buildings

2013-09-11 00:00

A GIANT statue that will tower nine metres above the lawns of the Union Buildings in Pretoria is set to become the biggest statue in the world honouring former president Nelson Mandela.

The Department of Arts and Culture yesterday confirmed that the bronze statue will be even taller than the Madiba statue in Bloemfontein (6,5 m high) or the one on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton (six metres high).

Precisely where the statue will be erected at the Union Buildings is not yet known.

Arts and Culture minister Paul Mashatile is expected to announce these details later in the week.

The Tshwane metro will help unveil the statue on Reconciliation Day on December 16 as part of the celebrations of 20 years of democracy next year.

Yesterday, the minister’s spokesperson Mack Lewele could not say if the statue of General Louis Botha on his horse in front of the Union Buildings will be affected.

Sculptor Kobus Hattingh, who also made the Mandela statues in Bloemfontein and Sandton, said a statue standing nine metres high would be “fantastic” and estimated the cost at over R6 million.

Head of intellectual property at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Heather Henriques, said there were currently more than 10 statues of Madiba across the world, while a long list of objects and animals had been named after him.
