Tamil organisations in SA were under surveillance

2015-02-28 00:00

TAMIL organisations, which have their largest population in KZN, were the subject of a covert intelligence operation.

On the request of the Sri Lankan secret service (SIS), the SSA probed South African Tamil organisations on whether they trained and supported Liberation Tigers of Talim Eelam (LTTE) fighters at “military training camps … held in South Africa in May 2010”.

The SSA said in a report in June 2010 they “could not confirm” any link but it said “local Tamil organisations in South Africa”, specifically mentioning its KZN chapter, were in contact with “similar organisations … including the LTTE”, but they could not “indicate which of these Tamil organisations” directly supported the LTTE.

South African Tamil Federation president Karthigasan Moothsamy said they would be “seeking an apology” from the SA government for being investigated.
