Task team: no decision reached on contracts

2010-11-25 00:00

IT is still not clear whether the contracts of city administrator Johann Mettler and his turnaround team will be renewed.

A full council meeting yesterday failed to reach a decision on the matter. It is the payment of the team that is under dispute. Most of the team members whose contracts ended in November were sent home last week. Mettler and Ben Dorfling remained behind but their contracts end in December.

According to councillors, the way they understand the matter is that the provincial Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and the Msunduzi executive committee (Exco) have calculated that it could cost about R9 million to retain the team until June next year.

Cogta believes it cannot foot the entire bill and the cost should be shared with the municipality.

Under dispute is whether the council wants to and whether it can afford to bear a portion of the costs.

Speaker Babu Baijoo said the provincial task team and the MEC for Cogta, Nomsa Dube, have called for a special council meeting which will take place on Monday to decide on the matter.
