Task team to tackle land invasion problem

2015-01-29 00:00

A SPECIAL task team with full legal support has been set up to deal with the land invasion problem plaguing the city.

The city said yesterday during a full council meeting that it took the land invasion problem, mushrooming around various areas around the city, very seriously.

Deputy municipal manager Dr Ray Ngcobo said places like Ambleton 3, the farm Shenstone, Marikane, Ashdown, Glenwood and Otto’s Bluff had been identified as hot spots.

“Ambleton 3 was identified as a priority as an integrated housing development and an application is currently with the provincial Department of Human Settlements awaiting approval of the project and preparation funding,” said Ngcobo.

Ambleton 3 was also identified as a project to relocate other informal settlements upon its upgrading, said Ngcobo.

He said it was therefore crucial that the Ambleton 3 project area was kept free of invasion.

Ngcobo said the strategy that had been adopted with Ambleton 3 and other hot spots was to visit the areas to check for compliance with various legislative provisions.

“Each structure is to be surveyed and the details of the occupants recorded,” said Ngcobo.
