Tata’s statue arrives in time

2013-12-12 00:00

WHILE crowds lined up at the Union Buildings to pay their respects to Nelson Mandela yesterday, nearby, his nine-metre bronze statue arrived from the Cape.

Transport contractor Willem Louw, who left Somerset West on Monday evening, said it has been an honour to bring the precious three-ton cargo to the Union Buildings this week. “Mandela was a great man and it made me feel good to transport it,” he said.

The statue will be unveiled on Monday, the Day of Reconciliation. It forms part of the 20th anniversary of democracy next year and the 100th anniversary of the Union Buildings, given added poignancy by Mandela’s death and funeral on Sunday. The Mandela statue will gaze out over the city from the spot where a bust of former prime minister General J.B.M. Hertzog previously stood.

Yesterday, workers were laying the last of the foundation for the statue to be erected tomorrow. Pretoria sculptors Ruhan Janse van Vuuren and André Prinsloo created the R8,4 million statue.
