Tatham’s Friday art class students exhibit

2010-11-09 00:00

ARTWORKS created by students who take part in the Tatham Art Gallery’s Friday art classes will be on show in the gallery until Friday.

Thulani Makhaye, an education officer for the Tatham in Chief Albert Luthuli Street (Commercial Road), Pietermaritzburg, said the exhibition will showcase works in different media and the subject matter explored during this year.

“It is hoped that through this exercise they [the students] will be encouraged and inspired to develop and gain confidence and continue to produce art,” he added. “This will also provide an opportunity for the public to be made aware of the art class activities and its impact on the youth who are not doing art at school, but demonstrate a love for creativity.

“We also hope the exhibition will demonstrate the need for schools in townships to provide art education as part of the curriculum or to use it as an extracurricular programme.”

Makhaye added that this year some of their students were selected to take part in the Gabisa-Indlela winter art project, an ongoing programme at the Centre for Visual Art at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, as part of its outreach and youth empowerment programme held in association with Caversham Press.
