Tax man: ‘Only English please, we’re poor’

2011-07-15 00:00

TAXPAYERS who are non-english speakers and who wish to contact the SA Revenue Services (SARS), can’t be helped in their own languages by the national call centre.

SARS spokesperson Adrian Lackay said adding all 11 official languages at the call centre would push up the SARS budget, which is funded by the public purse.

Lackay was responding to a Witness query following complaints from members of the public who complained that when contacting the call centre, they do not have the option of being assisted in any of the other 10 official languages.

“If taxpayers need assistance in a vernacular language they need to go to a branch office where they will try to assist them,” said Lackay. “We must be mindful of the cost of having all 11 languages available at the call centre because our budget is funded by public money or taxpayers’ money.”
