Taxi battle hits family’s home

2008-08-12 00:00

A family in Cato Manor, Durban, had a rude awakening when a minibus taxi, which had been shot at, crashed into their house in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The family were asleep when there was a shoot-out between taxi operators in front of their gate at about 3 am. They were awakened by a crash as the taxi ran into the wall of their house.

Ten minibus taxis were shot at in Cato Manor and neighbouring Chesterville.

“Lucky the family members were not injured because the taxi crashed on the side of the house where there was no one sleeping,” said Transport spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha.

The Transport Department is concerned that the taxi violence in some parts of the eThekwini Metro mostly affects innocent people.

The shooting came shortly after a meeting last week at which rival taxi associations signed a peace deal.

After the recent shooting the department called another meeting late yesterday. “If these discussions fail … the area will be declared a crisis area,” said Transport MEC Bheki Cele.
