Taxi crash in Marburg

2010-10-22 00:00

EIGHTEEN people were making their way home when the taxi they were travelling in on the N2 towards Paddock collided with a truck in Marburg.

The collision occured at around 5 pm when the taxi driver allegedly drove through a red robot.

An eyewitness who requested anonymity said he was eating at the KFC outlet in Marburg when he saw the accident unfold.

“The taxi driver was in the wrong; he went through a red robot when the truck was still going through a green robot,” said the man.

“The taxi rolled at least twice.”

The same eyewitness, who used to work as a paramedic, immediately began to help the people who were struggling to get out of the taxi.

“The driver escaped uninjured but there were two people, a man and a woman, who needed jaws-of-life assistance to be removed from the taxi,” he said.

“It is a miracle that nobody was killed.”

The brother of the owner of the taxi, Lawrence Mthembu, told The Witness that the driver had failed to see the red traffic light.

The driver was treated for his injuries and shock on the scene by paramedics and then taken to Port Shepstone Hospital with the other injured passengers.

“My brother does have insurance and he has another taxi, but this is a huge loss for him,” he said.

“It was a terrible accident and we hope everyone recovers well,” he told The Witness.
