Taxi group strikes after alleged threats over route

2014-11-20 00:00

RIVALRY over taxi routes allegedly resulted in gun threats between the Eastwood taxi owners’ association and the Glenwood taxi owners’ association yesterday morning on Manning Road.

A Glenwood taxi driver, who asked to remain unnamed, said they had embarked on a strike after threats from Eastwood taxi owners who did not allow them to use Main Road, which joins Bishopstowe Road and Manning Avenue, because the route is owned by the Eastwood taxi owners’ association.

“We are told not to pick up commuters along Main Road because they own the route, but their taxis do not operate on that route causing delays for commuters,” he said.

According to taxi drivers, Eastwood taxis charge R9 for passengers taking a taxi along the route and Glenwood taxis charge R6, resulting in commuters choosing to ride with the cheaper taxi.

An Eastwood taxi driver, who also refused to reveal his name, told The Witness that they were told to continue working while taxi owners deal with the situation.

A Glenwood commuter, who wanted to remain anonymous, felt that something should be done about the grievance between the two associations to sort out the situation.

The Pietermaritzburg regional taxi association was not aware of the strike, however two Eastwood and Glenwood taxi association spokespeople known to The Witness confirmed the strike and had arranged a meeting in Eastwood late yesterday to resolve the situation.

Police had not commented by the time of going to press yesterday.
