Taxi kills cop at crash scene

2011-07-06 00:00

A DURBAN police officer was killed after being hit by a taxi early yesterday morning while attending to a minor accident.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said at about 5.15 am a vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the barricades.

The driver sustained light injuries.

Two police officers from Mariannhill’s area crime combating unit were directing traffic at the accident scene on the M4 northbound near Jacobs when a taxi crashed into Constable Mthokozisi Mqadi (38), seriously injuring him. He was taken to hospital.

The second officer, Constable Nombulelo Shelembe (38), was killed when another taxi crashed into her soon after Mqadi was hit.

Zwane said the taxi drivers were taken to the Brighton Beach police station for questioning.

A case of culpable homicide has been opened, but no charge has been laid against the drivers.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said it is sad and ironic that a police officer should die while tending to an accident where only “relatively minor injuries” were sustained.
