Taxi’s 200-metre trail of destruction

2009-01-16 00:00

An out-of-control minibus taxi left a 200-metre trail of destruction as it knocked down electricity poles, ploughed through two fences into business premises and smashed into three parked vehicles near Sobantu yesterday morning.

The taxi eventually came to a halt in the premises of Garden City Commercial, who have calculated damage of at least R50 000. A witness said the vehicle was travelling at a “high speed or else it would have stopped when it first hit the pole”.

The taxi, a Toyota Quantum, was travelling towards Sobantu along Grix Road when the driver understeered on a bend and veered from one side of the road to the other.

The driver hit an electric pole on the far pavement, then swerved back on to the opposite pavement and ploughed along for more than 150 metres before smashing through a concrete fence and then an iron fence. Finally, it hit three cars and a concrete pole before coming to a halt.

The damage caused by the crash at the Garden City Commercial premises resulted in disruption of telephone network connections.

“Computer cables and telephone lines were broken, our landline phones and computers are down.

We are still assessing the damage,” said Garden City branch manager Marius Barnard.

The three vehicles belonged to staff members.

The police have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving. The driver was slightly injured in the hand. There were no other injuries.
