Taxis welcome sky bridge

2011-11-14 00:00

THE Margate-Bambanani Taxi Association has welcomed the announcement by Hibiscus Coast Municipality that the Margate Sky Bridge construction will be complete before the end of the month.

The bridge will secure safe passage of pedestrians between the Pick n Pay centre at the back of Hibiscus Mall and the newly constructed Margate Taxi Rank.

Construction and installations are under way and the municipality announced last week that the steel pedestrian walkway is set to be opened on November 20.

Mandla Mzelemu, chairperson of the taxi association, said the members are very happy at the news. He said that many shoppers who go to the mall wait on the roadside for the taxi.

“The people do not go to the taxi rank. After they do their shopping they just stand on the side [waiting] for the taxi and it is dangerous because there are a lot of people and a lot of vehicles …”

HCM spokesperson Simon Soboyisa said the area has been identified as a accident hot-spot and that the project was designed to minimise road accidents.

“It is the intention of the municipality to ensure that the bridge is user-friendly after its completion and will not pose any threats whatsoever.”

The aim is to accelerate the completion of the sky bridge before the start of the festive season while meeting all safety regulations.

“Up to this stage more than half of the work projected for the sky bridge has been finalised. The public is requested to co-operate with us,” Soboyisa said.

Closure: Marine Drive

MARGATE residents and road users should take note that part of Marine Drive will be closed off next week. The road from the intersection of the police station up to the entrance of the Margate taxi rank will be closed off on November 20 between 6 am and 6 pm due to construction.
