Teacher cuts: dept agrees to halt transfers

2012-02-03 00:00

A LEGAL dispute between the KZN Education Department and four schools over cuts in the teaching staff they were allocated this year will be heard as an opposed motion in the high court on June 22.

In terms of a court order granted yesterday by Judge Fikile Mokgohloa the Education Department undertook not to transfer any affected teachers until the case has been finalised.

Gert Maritz and Gelofte primary schools in Pietermaritzburg and Pinetown and Scottburgh high schools approached the high court in December to interdict the department from implementing the proposed teacher cuts at their schools pending an application to review the allocation of posts for 2012.

The Education Department blamed a drop in enrolment figures at the affected schools for the decision. — WR.
